The ZITA Optics is located along Zivnostenska Street within the larger historical city centre of Bratislava, Slovakia. Intended as a family eyewear business, the architects were approached by the client with a request for a new unique concept that stands out due to its bold simplicity and refined design. The focus of the shop lies on the rigorous selection of frames for prescription glasses.
Oslovil nás už pri hľadaní samotného miesta, čo bolo určujúce aj pri samotnom návrhu iteriérového dizajnu. Nakoniec sme našli nie úplne ideálny priestor, v ktorom práve skončila prevádzka kaviarne.
The architects were involved early in searching for the new location, which was a defining factor for the evolving design concept. Eventually, not too ideal space was chosen, a former coffee house. The originally disordered layout was initially rid of the many separation walls, which were breaking apart the already small interior rooms.
The plan was simplified, and space was opened towards the street. The pivotal intervention to the layout was the partial removal of a bearing wall, which split the space into two adjacent rooms. Further, the interior is defined by a central wall that creates a border between the shop front with displayed products and the eye clinic with the rear service space. Behind the walled strip is an examination room on one side, and a workroom, each with a separate washroom facility.
The interior concept is based on a plain coloured facade strip which frames a segment of this border wall and visually unifies the space as a whole. The solid desaturated ‘orange’ colour palette serves as a recognisable shop front. The floors are smoothened with self-levelling cement of natural light grey colouring. Both spaces utilise differently coloured façade strip motif. The interior concept is complemented by the minimal pure black furnishing and a sturdy oak desk. The overall impression of the interior is suppressed so that the displayed frames remain the key feature of the design.
