APARTMENT K

The apartment K in Hodonin, Czech Republic, is a product of combining two smaller apartments early before the construction of the apartment complex commenced, which allowed the architects to substantially alter the apartment’s disposition according to the clients’ liking. The spatial concept for the apartment was designed for a young, growing family.

The former layout has been re-worked and partially turned into an open-plan. While the kitchen is spatially defined, it flows naturally through the dining zone into the living room. This zoned but open-plan living space is split from the enclosed bedroom wing by an inserted material wall. The walnut material wall at the same time provides both storage and service space hide-out.

With the only exception of the two bedrooms, travertine is used for all the floors in the apartment, pre-cut to fit the individual room sizes. Travertine is further used in the master bathroom as a wall cladding. The colour palette is based on the honest materialisation of the key design elements; the white painted walls, the walnut veneer of the inserted material wall, and the travertine floor. The toned down natural colour palette is also characteristic of the interior furnishing. The dark brown tones of the wall panelling and flooring reflect in the sturdy walnut furniture, which is in contrast with the light softness of the kitchen and master bedroom.
